👁‍🗨Let’s learn a few things about the wreck we’re going to visit:
The ship, with Captain Panag. Mourtzis and engineer Ioannis Moros, a crew of 18, and carrying the captain’s and the first mate’s wives, had departed on January 5th, 1978 from Lavrio heading to Bulgaria, unladen.

The weather began to worsen, with winds reaching 8 Beaufort and heavy seas. The captain of the Kyra-Leni sought shelter in the bay of Karystos until the weather improved. The entry into the bay during darkness and rain, the presence of other anchored vessels, and the strong winds made staying in the area dangerous. Therefore, the captain cruised along the leeward side of the bay until sunrise. However, as the wind escalated to storm force (10-11 Beaufort), the vessel couldn’t maneuver back toward Karystos. Instead, it headed southwest aiming to shelter in a leeward bay near Sounio. At around 12:30, the ship passed Cape Sounio intending to enter the bay of Legrena. But again, due to the strong winds, entry was aborted, and the captain decided to head to the leeward side of Patroklos Island, hoping for better weather.

As the ship approached, the crew prepared to anchor close to the shore. But upon nearing about 5 stadia (approx. 1 km), a swirling wind current rendered the rudder ineffective. The engine did not respond to full reverse, and despite dropping the port anchor, the ship violently struck the rocks on its port side. An attempt was made to pull away, but the ship listed to port, so the captain maneuvered back and dropped the starboard anchor as well. Water began entering the engine room and hold No. 2, causing a severe list. A distress signal was sent. Everyone on board abandoned ship using liferafts and reached the shore, while Kyra-Leni sank at 14:50 on 6/1/78. The castaways were rescued the following morning by a rescue boat.

The castaways reached shore with great difficulty and walked all night to reach the northern coast of the island, where they were hosted by the local watchman.

The wreck of the Kyra-Leni lies split in two. Positioned along a northwest axis, the stern stands upright with a port list, while the bow lies on its port side on the seabed. Maximum depth is 30 meters, with a minimum of around 18 meters.
